SHIFTING MATTER 2026 (coming soon)
JOIN US FOR OUR 2026 EDITION
In our era of crisis, fueled by extractive capitalist practices, marked by an overload of information and stimulation from media and consumption, our relationship to the natural world and its habitat has shifted from communication to distraction. The works in the exhibition think of communication as a chain of knowledge between bodies, species, and material systems, relating to nature's ways as an alternative to single-use and disposable culture.
Communication in nature is built with a different composition. Due to poor eyesight, orb-weaver spiders use vibrations, detected through sensitive hairs and organs on their legs. They use vibrations to detect, classify, and locate prey, communicate with mates, and even "hear" sounds by interpreting how air particles shake their silk. A shifting matter core concept in this, spider-silk becomes a tool for communication as well as part as a material inspiration to artists.
Shitting Matter’s second iteration will find the artful synthesis of artists and designers whose practices communicate the essentials for creating environmental awareness. Material literacy becomes central to this proposition: a way of reading, sensing, and engaging with matter as an active participant in these exchanges. This group exhibition celebrates a profound love for nature-related materials, embracing them as living collaborators.
