ABOUT
Shifting Matter is a collective project initiated in 2025 by Sabrina Merayo Nuñez and Deville Cohen, later joined in 2026 by Lolo Ostia as part of the curatorial team. It emerges at the intersection of artists and practitioners committed to placing interdisciplinary artistic practice in common—bridging design, science, art, and technology as interconnected fields rather than isolated domains.

The project was conceived from a shared observation: across multiple disciplines, a converging direction has become increasingly evident. Questions of sustainability, the development of biomaterials, and the shifting relationship between human and non-human systems are no longer peripheral concerns, but central frameworks shaping contemporary thought and production.

Shifting Matter responds to this moment by creating a platform where these parallel investigations can meet, overlap, and inform one another. It fosters a space for collaboration and exchange, where material research, ecological awareness, and technological experimentation operate together, not as separate methodologies but as part of a continuous, relational practice.

At its core, the project understands material as an active agent and artistic practice as a site of negotiation between disciplines, species, and systems. By bringing together diverse voices working within this shared paradigm, Shifting Matter positions itself as both a reflection of and a contribution to a broader cultural shift—one that redefines how we produce, relate, and coexist in the present.

Sabrina Merayo Nuñez
Sabrina Merayo Nuñez is an Argentine multidisciplinary artist and material researcher based in New York. Her practice focuses on biomaterial innovation and interactive systems, developing Orifex, a proprietary bioplastic made from algae, plants, collagen, and natural oils. She works through a process of co-creation with living systems, integrating microorganisms, fungi, and sensor-based technologies into responsive sculptures. Her work has been exhibited internationally at Collectible Brussels, Milan Design Week, 3 Days of Design Copenhagen, Diriyah Biennale, and Shifting Mirrors at Maison & Objet Hong Kong. She has participated in residencies including SVA Bio Art Residency and Coalesce Center for Biological Arts.

Deville Cohen
Deville Cohen is an artist living and working in New York City. His interdisciplinary practice merges sculpture and technology to create kinetic solar sculptures, video installations, and live performances that center physical objects as tools for collaborative processes. His works have been shown and produced in venues such as MoMA PS1, SFMoMA, PS122 Gallery, International Objects, The Center for the LessGood Idea, and Bates Dance Festival. He is a founding member of Artist Commit, an artist-run initiative invested in advocating for a climate-conscious, equitable, and resilient future. Deville is currently a visiting assistant professor at the Collaborative Arts Department at Tisch School of the Arts of New York University.

Lolo Ostia
Artist, educator, and researcher working at the intersection of art, ecology, and material storytelling. Her practice spans installations, sculpture, and moving image, exploring relationships between human and nonhuman systems through living materials such as bacterial cellulose, bioplastics, microbes, and upcycled matter. With a focus on texture, form, and transformation, her work has been exhibited internationally. She holds degrees from FIT, Parsons, and NYU. Dedicated to biomaterials education, she leads workshops and lectures widely. Her research is published by Cambridge University Press, and her work has received major grants and fellowships, including recognition from Columbia University’s Brown Institute.
